Simple swaps to make in your home to cut back on waste:
Swapping out your dinner time paper napkins for cloth napkins not only eliminates some waste, it saves you a few dollars each year. It may sound like a lot of laundry, but don’t be afraid to use napkins more than once among the family, especially if your meals aren’t messy.
Instead of grabbing multiple paper towels while cooking, pick up some microfiber kitchen towels to use in their place. These towels pick up everything because of their unique texture. Better yet, many brands have silver fibers woven in to kill bacteria and cut back on how often you need to wash your towels. Pick up a few and see what you think.
When things are awkward sizes or don’t fit well into tupperware, it’s easy to reach for plastic wrap to keep it fresh. Instead of grabbing a sheet of plastic, pick up some beeswax coated sheets or other plastic wrap alternative. These products are washable and reusable, once again cutting back on what goes in your trash can and saving you money in the long run.
Play with composting
Composting isn’t for everyone, but if you garden or keep house plants it may be just right for you. Get either a small composting bin or a large composter for the backyard. As you prepare meals, stash all your food scraps in a bowl and transfer it to the composter when you’re done. Soon you’ll have nutrient rich soil your plants will love. And not to mention, your trash can will be much less stinky! If you don't want to do it yourself, look into Compost Colorado for pickup!
Buy in bulk
Bulk products are becoming more common and chain stores, making it easier to buy in bulk. Whether at Costco or Sprouts, bulk purchasing cuts back on the amount of packaging you have to throw away. Play around with reusable canvas or cloth bags or talk to your local store about using jars. All you need are a few containers at home to unload your goods into and you’re set.
Milk is something you never want to run out of, so instead of rely on picking it up from the store, have it delivered. Most milk delivery services reuse their plastic or glass jugs which means you don’t have to crowd your trash can with a bulky container. Additionally, many milk delivery services provide high quality organic milk, straight to your door!
It doesn’t take much to make a big impact!
